This Veterans Day became Independence Day for Meaya Walker who is a U.S. Army Veteran and was referred to the Wheels4Hope program from StepUp Greensboro. Wheels4Hope held a special Car Blessing presenting her with the keys to a 2003 Honda Civic. Walker has worked extremely hard for this opportunity by saving the $588 for her vehicle. Having a car will help Walker get back and forth to work and doctor’s appointments and make it possible for her to attend college in the Spring. “It means a lot getting hold of my life again and making the most of it,” said Walker.
What makes this placement special is that many of the volunteers who worked on Walker’s Honda are U.S. Veterans and were on hand to celebrate with her for this milestone.
For the last four years, Larry Bowden a Vietnam Veteran has volunteered his time repairing vehicles at the Greensboro garage. “Working on the vehicle for anyone who is in need of transportation is rewarding. It is even more rewarding for me to know a car I repaired will be going to a veteran who has served in the military the same as I did,” said Bowden.
